Pattern repetition in art goes back to Indigenous practices both as individuals and as community. Some of the most striking pattern art is the dot painting of the Australian Aboriginals of Papunya. A good friend used to run a gallery in NYC of their beautiful artisan pieces. Some were patterned just for pattern sake to create effects of sun or water or stones. Others were more representational and told stories through pattern.
Thank you for sharing! I will do some research and create a post about the dot paintings– I have seen some examples but long ago. Agreed that indigenous cultures pioneered pattern as a form of expression and communication.
